Trends in Naturally Colouring the Food across the Globe……………

In today’s scenario, consumer is attracted to the food by is colour as it is associated with the quality and freshness of food, so consumers select food products based on an attractive colour. The market survey says that natural colours now make up 31% of the colouring market compared to synthetic colour with 40%.

Many international organizations are finding solutions for replacing synthetic colours with natural stable colours which are cost effective too.

Why do we need Colouring the food products?
  • To give an attract appearance to the food stuffs for making more appetite.
  • To restore original appearance of the food, but most of the time natural colours are destroyed by heat & subsequent storage.
  • To ensure uniformity of colour balance in food
  • To serve as visual indication of food quality
  • To meet consumer’s expectations
There are two ways of adding colour to food, such as in synthetic or natural form. Synthetic dyes do not occur in nature and have to be manufactured artificially. These colours exhibit good tolerance towards heat, light and chemical influences.

Natural colours are obtained from the food ingredients itself, but usage of this has utmost importance. For example-
Turmeric - This gives bright yellow in colour due to the colour pigment known as “Curcuminoids”.
Beta Carotene - gives orange yellow colour to the food products. It is a precursor to vitamin A.
Paprika- is extracted from the pod of capsicum annum or paprika. They provide bright orange to red orange colours to the food.
Beetroot juice- It is obtained by pressing beets and subsequent concentration process. It is rich in sugar, minerals and protein too.
Caramel – it is obtained by heating sugars.

Future scope for food colours: -
Since there are negative aspects of artificial colours existent as Side effects, hence natural colours are taking center stage. Also natural colour provides scope for healthy lifestyles.

My Last Day at T. John College………

Finally the day has come when I have to say good bye to T. John College, Bangalore. It is being long journey in T. john College since four and half years approximately.

I joined this College in the year 2006, June 23 as a Lecturer. I didn’t realize that I will serve to this institution for more years, but it just happened. Day by day I involved myself in academic and administrative activities.

I saw four final year batches of students to pass out from T. John College. So many of them were placed in prestigious organizations like Taj Group of Hotels, ITC Group, Sheraton Group, Leela, Le Meridian, The Oberoi Group, Golden Chariot, Jet Airways, Carnival Cruiselines, etc.

While recollecting my memory I feel satisfied that for this college I gave my level best in all the circumstances. I have learnt a lot from each and everyone. I achieved so many fame in this college, few of them are: -
  • Become Certified ISO Auditor.
  • Was the T. John College ISO Coordinator.
  • Awarded as Best Teacher in 2009-2010.
  • Had been AICTE coordinator.
  • Had been in Associate NAAC coordinator.
  • Was the in charge of making University affiliation report & LIC Report
I have learnt so many lessons from my colleagues (whether good or bad), out of them one had great impression in my life and who taught me how to control my anger, how to lead from front, how to be perfect in all work, etc. All those are helping me to lead my way to success.

I believe in one Quote said by someone, “It is true that only people who are jealous of you & below standards comment on you and the one who is above you, just smiles at your mistakes”…….

So go on performing consistently, if you someone criticizes it means you are far ahead of them, if someone smiles at your faults try to rectify your mistakes, success will surely come to your feet……

An Experience of NAAC Peer Team visit to T. John College….

On 18th and 19th October 2010, a Peer Team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited our College for Re-accreditation process. It was a wonderful experience for me being part of the entire process led by NAAC Peer Team members.

The team was headed by Prof. Basudev Barman, Chairperson, Dr. V. L. Maheshwari, Member and Dr. M. D. Jahagirdar, Member Coordinator. All the above NAAC peer team members were from various states other than Karnataka.

I had been witnessed of each and every aspects of their evaluation process. We, the NAAC Core team members (comprising myself, Mrs. Mohini Bhat, Mr. Rajesh Naik, Dr. Anuradha Arya, Dr. Nilanjana Basu, Dr. George Easaw, Mrs. Shikha Tiwari, Prof. H. G. Rajshekhara) of T. John College prepared the necessary ground work already in advance for smooth conducting of the entire inspection.

On completion of the inspection, NAAC Chairperson handed over the report to our Principal Dr. George Easaw during exit meeting, hope we will get the much needed “A” Grade (results to be declared by first week of November).

This experience is like a feather to my hat.

Smoking...........A dangerous addiction towards death.......

“Smoking is injurious to health”….a statutory warnings you can find on every Cigarette Packet, in spite of that also some people love smoking.
Nicotine present in tobacco spoils the lungs while smoking. Smokers do not realize the adverse effects of smoking while in the early stages, but when it becomes as addiction, smoking shows its original colour in forms of various diseases.

Every word of “CIGARETTE” is the sign of diseases: -

C : Cancer
I : I.H.D.
G : Gastric Ulcer
A : Atheroclerasis
R : Respiratory Disease
E : Emphysema
T : Thromboembalic Disease
T : Tuberculosis Relopse
E : Eye Disease

Smoking kills you before your real death, so keep yourself away from Smoking and also from me.

Remember…..Smoker never wins their life..........

A Trip to Shivanasamudra waterfall with my Students……..

Shivanasamudra is popularly known as “Shimsa”, it is situated in Karnataka, 60 kilometer away from Mysore and approximately 148 kilometer from Bangalore

Shivanasamudra has two waterfalls in two sides, one known as “Gaganachukki” and another one is “Barachukki”. The water fall is from the river Kaveri. On the down side of the place there is a Hydral Power Generation station belonging to Karnataka state. There is no entry for tourists to see this place. This hydral power plant is the first in Asia.
One must visit the falls to enjoy the nature’s scenic beauty.

There is generally no provision for tourists to get into the water of Gaganachukki waterfalls, but one must enjoy the flows of Barachukki waterfalls, not at the center where water flow is more. Instead tourists can enjoy an adventurous bathing in the sides of the Barachukki waterfalls, where the water flow pressure is relatively less in volume compare to the center one, but overall it is a beautiful creation of nature.

From Shivanasamudram, you can visit the place called Thalekad at the banks of Kavery. Thalekad is famous for temples submerged in sand and the main temple. The distance between Shivanasamudram and Thalakad is 35 Kms.

I had a trip to these places (third time for me) with my students Shatakshi, Susheel, Irslan, Anwar, Quasid, Ashish Augustine, Sinoj, Tharun, Jackson, Ridalion, Rani, Sarun, Sunny and Eva on 09th October 2010 (Sunday). All are from T. John College. It was an awesome trip, we all have enjoyed a lot.
